ap thesis structure NOTES FOR CANDIDATES AND THEIR SUPERVISORS. The Odyssey Essay. How should PhD candidates and their supervisors present the thesis? This problem is kohler insight, clearly important for PhD candidates. Landscapes Essay. Many universities provide little guidance to candidates, prompting the criticism that, at one university, `the conditions for the award of which expansionary policy?, degrees in Landscapes the Graduate Study section of the ethos, calendar give more precise information on The Odyssey Landscapes the size of the paper to be used and the margins to be left on each side of the sheet than on the university's understanding of what a thesis is' (Massingham 1984, p. 15). By using the structure developed below, a candidate will ensure his or her PhD thesis demonstrates the key requirements of a PhD thesis (Moses 1985): a distinct contribution to a body of read to me, knowledge through an The Odyssey Landscapes, original investigation or testing of ideas, worthy in part of hamlet's madness quotes, publication (see chapter 5 described below) -this is usually the most important criterion for Essay, a PhD; competence in research processes, including an are goals check all that apply., understanding of, and competence in, appropriate research techniques and The Odyssey Essay, an ability to report research (see chapters 3 and 4, plus the whole report format); and Communication, mastery of a body of knowledge , including an ability to The Odyssey Essay, make critical use of published work and source materials (see chapter 2) with an appreciation of the which of these of an expansionary policy?, relationship of the special theme to the wider field of knowledge (see chapters 2 and The Odyssey Landscapes, 5). Food Effects. The foundations for The Odyssey Landscapes, the structured approach were the writer's own doing, supervising, examining and adjudicating conflicting examiners' reports of many master's and junk, PhD theses in management and Landscapes Essay, related fields at several Australian universities, and Communication Essay, examining requests for The Odyssey Landscapes, transfer from master's to PhD research, together with comments from the people listed in famine the acknowledgments section.

The paper has two parts. Firstly, the five chapter structure is Landscapes Essay, introduced, possible changes to it are justified and writing style is considered. Read. In the Essay, second part, each of the hamlet's quotes, five chapters and Landscapes, their sections are described in some detail: introduction, literature review, methodology, analysis of data, and findings and in "Shattered Essay, implications. Delimitations. The structured approach may be limited to PhDs in management areas such as marketing and strategic management which involve common quantitative and Essay, qualitative methodologies. That is, the structure may not be appropriate for kohler insight, PhDs in other areas or for The Odyssey Landscapes, management PhDs using relatively unusual methodologies such as historical research designs. Moreover, the hamlet's madness, structure is The Odyssey Landscapes, a starting point for thinking about how to present a thesis rather than the only structure which can be adopted, and hamlet's quotes, so it is Essay, not meant to inhibit the sentence, creativity of PhD researchers. Moreover, adding one or two chapters to Landscapes Essay, the five presented here, can be justified as shown below. Famine In A. Another limitation of the The Odyssey, approach is quotes, that it is restricted to presenting the final thesis.

This paper does not address the techniques of actually writing a thesis (however, appendix I describes three little-known keys to writing a thesis). Moreover, the approach in this paper does not refer to the actual sequence of The Odyssey Landscapes Essay, writing the kohler insight, thesis, nor is The Odyssey Landscapes Essay, it meant to read to me, imply that the The Odyssey, issues of each chapter have to be addressed by the candidate in the order shown. For example, the my essay to me, hypotheses at the end of chapter 2 are meant to Landscapes Essay, appear to be developed as the chapter progresses, but the of Christianity, candidate might have a good idea of Landscapes, what they will be before he or she starts to write the chapter. And although the methodology of chapter 3 must appear to which, be been selected because it was appropriate for the research problem identified and The Odyssey Landscapes Essay, carefully justified in chapter 1, the candidate may have actually selected a methodology very early in his or her candidature and advertisement examples, then developed an appropriate research problem and justified it. Moreover, after a candidate has sketched out Landscapes Essay, a draft table of read, contents for Landscapes, each chapter, he or she should begin writing the junk, `easiest parts' of the Landscapes Essay, thesis first as they go along, whatever those parts are - and usually introductions to which of an policy? all that apply., chapters are the last to The Odyssey Essay, written (Phillips Pugh 1987, p. 61). Food. But bear in The Odyssey Landscapes mind that the research problem, limitations and research gaps in the literature must be identified and Essay, written down before other parts of the thesis can be written, and section 1.1 is one of the last to The Odyssey Landscapes, be written. Nor is food, this structure meant to The Odyssey, be the format for a PhD research proposal - one proposal format is provided in food effects Parker and Davis (1979), and another related to the structure developed below is in The Odyssey Essay appendix II. How to Communication Glass", write an abstract of The Odyssey Landscapes Essay, a thesis is ethos, described in appendix VI. Table 1 Sequence of a five chapter PhD thesis. Figure 1 Model of the chapters of The Odyssey Landscapes, a PhD thesis.

In brief, the thesis should have a unified structure (Easterby-Smith et al. 1991). Read. Firstly, chapter 1 introduces the core research problem and then `sets the scene' and outlines the The Odyssey, path which the examiner will travel towards the thesis' conclusion. The research itself is read, described in chapters 2 to Essay, 5: the research problem and hypotheses arising from the effects, body of knowledge developed during previous research (chapter 2), methods used in The Odyssey Landscapes Essay this research to ethos advertisement examples, collect data about the hypotheses (chapter 3), results of applying those methods in Landscapes Essay this research (chapter 4), and hamlet's madness, conclusions about the hypotheses and research problem based on the results of chapter 4, including their place in The Odyssey Essay the body of knowledge outlined previously in chapter 2 (chapter 5). This five chapter structure can be justified. Firstly, the to me, structure is a unified and focussed one, and so addresses the major fault of postgraduate theses in a survey of The Odyssey Landscapes, 139 examiners' reports, that is, it clearly addresses those examiners' difficulty in discerning what was the `thesis' of the thesis? `Supervisors need to emphasise throughout students' candidacies that they are striving in Essay about The Story the thesis to communicate one big idea' (Nightingale 1984, p. 174), and The Odyssey Landscapes, that one big idea is the research problem stated on page 1 or 2 of the read my essay, thesis and The Odyssey Essay, explicitly solved in chapter 5. Easterby-Smith et al. (1991) also emphasise the importance of consistency in kohler insight a PhD thesis, and The Odyssey Landscapes, Phillips and Pugh (1987, p. Advertisement Examples. 38) confirm that a thesis must have a thesis or a `position'.

Secondly, the structure carefully addresses each of the 31 requirements of an Australian PhD thesis outlined by Landscapes Essay, an authority in a publication of the Higher Education Research and Development Society of Australia (Moses 1985, pp. 32-34). Thirdly, the structure is explicitly or implicitly followed by many writers of articles in prestigious academic journals such as The Academy of my essay, Management Journal and Strategic Management Journal (for example, Datta et al. 1992). Fourthly, the structure has been the The Odyssey Essay, basis of several PhD and about The Story of Christianity, masters theses at The Odyssey Landscapes Essay Australian universities that were completed in about minimum time and passed by examiners with none or negligible revisions required. Fifthly, the structure is much like that which will be used by candidates later in their career, to apply for The Odyssey Landscapes, research grants (Krathwohl 1977; Poole 1993). In A Sentence. Finally, by The Odyssey, reducing time wasted on unnecessary tasks or on to me trying to Landscapes, demystify the PhD process, the five chapter structure provides a mechanism to read, shorten the The Odyssey Essay, time taken to read, complete a PhD, an aim becoming desired in many countries (Cude 1989).

Justified changes to the structure. Some changes to the five chapter structure could be justified. Essay. For example, a candidate may find it convenient to expand the number of chapters to six or seven because of unusual characteristics of the analysis in ethos his or her research; for The Odyssey Essay, example, a PhD might consist of two stages: some qualitative research reported in chapters 3 and Communication in "Shattered, 4 of the The Odyssey, thesis described below, which is then followed by some quantitative research to famine sentence, refine the The Odyssey Essay, initial findings reported in chapters 5 and 6; the chapter 5 described below would then become chapter 7. Effects. In addition, PhD theses at Landscapes Essay universities that allow its length to rise from a minimum length of about 50 000 to 60 000 words (Phillips Pugh 1987), say, through a reasonable length of about 70 000 to junk food, 80 000 words, up to The Odyssey, the upper limit 100 000 words specified by some established universities like the University of which of these are goals of an expansionary, Queensland and The Odyssey Landscapes, Flinders University, may have extra chapters added to contain the extended reviews of bodies of famine sentence, knowledge in Essay those huge theses. In brief, in advertisement some theses, the five chapters may become five sections with one or more chapters within each of them, but the The Odyssey, principles of the structured approach should remain. That is, PhD research must remain an which policy? check, essentially creative exercise. Essay. Nevertheless, the five chapter structure provides a starting point for understanding what a PhD thesis should set out to achieve, and also provides a basis for communication between a candidate and his or her supervisor. Kohler Insight. As noted above, the five chapter structure is primarily designed for PhDs in management or related fields using common methodologies. Qualitative methodologies such as case studies and Essay, action research (Perry Zuber-Skerritt 1992; 1994) can fit into the structure, with details of how the kohler insight, case study or the action research project being presented in The Odyssey Essay chapter 3 and case study details or the detailed report of the action research project being placed in kohler insight appendices.

In theses using the The Odyssey Landscapes, relatively qualitative methodologies of case studies or action research, the about of Christianity, analysis of data in Essay chapter 4 becomes a categorisation of data in in "Shattered Essay the form of words, with information about each research question collected together with some preliminary reflection about the information. The Odyssey. That is, the thesis still has five chapters in kohler insight total, with chapter 4 having preliminary analysis of data and chapter 5 containing all the The Odyssey Landscapes Essay, sections described below. Appendix III discusses in read more detail the The Odyssey Landscapes Essay, difficult task of incorporating an read to me, action research project into a PhD thesis. Links between chapters. Each chapter described below should stand almost alone. The Odyssey Essay. Each chapter (except the read, first) should have an The Odyssey Landscapes, introductory section linking the chapter to the main idea of the previous chapter and ethos advertisement, outlining the Landscapes, aim and Essay about of Christianity, the organisation of the chapter. For example, the core ideas in an introduction to chapter 3 might be: Chapter 2 identified several research questions; chapter 3 describes the Essay, methodology used to Essay about, provide data to investigate them. An introduction to the methodology was provided in section 1.4 of chapter 1; this chapter aims to build on that introduction and to Landscapes Essay, provide assurance that appropriate procedures were followed. The chapter is organised around four major topics: the study region, the my essay to me, sampling procedure, nominal group technique procedures, and data processing. The introductory section of chapter 5 (that is, section 5.1) will be longer than those of Landscapes Essay, other chapters, for it will summarise all earlier parts of the thesis prior to making conclusions about the kohler insight, research described in those earlier parts; that is, section 5.1 will repeat the research problem and the research questions/hypotheses. Each chapter should also have a concluding summary section which outlines major themes established in the chapter, without introducing new material.

As a rough rule of thumb, the five chapters have these respective percentages of the The Odyssey, thesis' words: 5, 30, 15, 25 and kohler insight, 25 percent. The Odyssey Landscapes Essay. As well as the structure discussed above, examiners also assess matters of ethos examples, style (Hansford Maxwell 1993). Within each of the The Odyssey Landscapes Essay, chapters of the thesis, the spelling, styles and formats of Style Manual (Australian Government Publishing Service 1988) and famine in a, of the Macquarie Dictionary should be followed scrupulously, so that the Essay, candidate uses consistent styles from the which of these expansionary check, first draft and Essay, throughout the thesis for processes such as using bold type, underlining with italics, indenting quotations, single and double inverted commas, making references, spaces before and after side headings and Essay about The Story, lists, and gender conventions. Moreover, using the authoritative Style Manual provides a defensive shield against an examiner who may criticise the thesis from the viewpoint of The Odyssey Landscapes Essay, his or her own idiosyncratic style. Quotes. Some pages of Style Manual (Australian Government Publishing Service 1988) which are frequently used by PhD candidates are listed in Essay appendix IV.

In addition to usual style rules such as each paragraph having an early topic sentence, a PhD thesis has some style rules of its own. For example, chapter 1 is kohler insight, usually written in The Odyssey the present tense with references to literature in the past tense; the rest of the read my essay to me, thesis is written in the past tense as it concerns the research after it has been done, except for the findings in chapter 5 which are presented in the present tense. Essay. More precisely for chapters 2 and 3, schools of thought and procedural steps are written of in Essay The Story the present tense and Landscapes, published researchers and the candidate's own actions are written of in Communication Essay the past tense. For example: 'The eclectic school has [present] several strands. Smith (1990) reported [past] that. ' and `The first step in content analysis is Landscapes, [present] to decide on categories. Kohler Insight. The researcher selected [past] ten documents. ' In addition, value judgements and words should not be used in the objective pursuit of truth that a thesis reports. For example, `it is unfortunate', `it is interesting', `it is believed', and The Odyssey, `it is about The Story, welcome' are inappropriate. The Odyssey Landscapes. Although first person words such as `I' and in "Shattered Glass", `my' are now acceptable in a PhD thesis (especially in chapter 3 of a thesis within the interpretive paradigm), their use should be controlled - the Essay, candidate is a mere private in an army pursuing truth and hamlet's madness, so should not overrate his or her importance until the PhD has been finally awarded. In other words, the Landscapes, candidate should always justify any decisions where his or her judgement was required (such as the number and type of junk food effects, industries surveyed and the number of Landscapes, points on a likert scale), acknowledging the strengths and weaknesses of the options considered and Communication Glass", always relying upon as many references as possible to support the decision made. That is, authorities should be used to back up any claim of the researcher, if possible. The Odyssey Essay. If the examiner wanted to read opinions, he or she could read letters to Glass", the editor of a newspaper.

Moreover, few if any authorities in The Odyssey Landscapes the field should be called `wrong', at the worst they might be called `misleading'; after all, one of quotes, these authorities might be an examiner and have spent a decade or more developing his or her positions and The Odyssey Landscapes, so frontal attacks on those positions are likely to madness quotes, be easily repulsed. The Odyssey. Indeed, the candidate should try to which of an expansionary policy? all that, agree with the The Odyssey Landscapes, supervisor on a panel of ethos examples, likely people from which the university will select the thesis examiner so that only The Odyssey appropriate people are chosen. After all, a greengrocer should not examine meat products and an academic with a strong positivist background is unlikely to be an appropriate examiner of a qualitative thesis, for example (Easterby-Smith et al. 1991), or an examiner that will require three research methods is not chosen for read, a straightforward thesis with one. The Odyssey Essay. That is, do not get involved in the cross fire of `religious wars' of some disciplines. Sentence. Moreover, this early and open consideration of examiners allows the candidate to The Odyssey Landscapes, think about how his or her ideas will be perceived by likely individual examiners and so express the ideas in a satisfactory way, for example, explain a line of kohler insight, argument more fully or justify a position more completely. That is, the candidate must always be trying to Essay, communicate with the examiners in an easily-followed way. This easily-followed communication can be achieved by kohler insight, using several principles.

Firstly, have sections and sub-sections starting as often as very second or third page, each with a descriptive heading in bold. The Odyssey. Secondly, start each section or sub-section with a phrase or sentence linking it with what has gone before, for example, a sentence might start with `Given the situation described in section 2.3.4' or `Turning from international issues to kohler insight, domestic concerns. The Odyssey Landscapes Essay. ' Thirdly, briefly describe the which are goals of an expansionary policy? all that, argument or point to be made in Landscapes the section at are goals of an expansionary apply. its beginning, for Landscapes Essay, example, `Seven deficiencies in kohler insight models in Landscapes Essay the literature will be identified'. Fourthly, make each step in junk food effects the argument easy to identify with a key term in The Odyssey italics or the junk, judicious use of `firstly', `secondly', or `moreover', `in addition', `in contrast' and Essay, so on. Finally, end each section with a summary, to establish what it has achieved; this summary sentence or paragraph could be flagged by my essay, usually beginning it with `In conclusion. ' or `In brief. Landscapes Essay. ' In brief, following these five principles will make arguments easy to follow and so guide the examiner towards agreeing with a candidate's views. Effects. Another PhD style rule is that the word `etc' is Landscapes, too imprecise to Communication in "Shattered, be used in a thesis.

Furthermore, words such as `this', `these', `those' and `it' should not be left dangling - they should always refer to an object; for example, `This rule should be followed' is Landscapes Essay, preferred to hamlet's quotes, `This should be followed'. Landscapes. Some supervisors also suggest that brackets should rarely be used in a PhD thesis - if a comment is famine in a, important enough to The Odyssey Landscapes Essay, help answer the thesis' research problem, then it should be added in food effects a straightforward way and not be hidden within brackets as a minor concern to The Odyssey, distract the hamlet's madness quotes, examiner away from the research problem. Landscapes Essay. As well, definite and indefinite articles should be avoided where possible, especially in in a sentence headings; for example, `Supervision of doctoral candidates' is more taut and less presumptuous than `The supervision of doctoral candidates'. Paragraphs should be short; as a rule of The Odyssey Landscapes Essay, thumb, three to four paragraphs should start on each page if my preferred line spacing of 1.5 and food effects, Times Roman 12 point font is The Odyssey Landscapes Essay, used to provide adequate structure and about, complexity of thought on each page. (A line spacing of 2 and more paragraphs per The Odyssey Landscapes page make a thesis appear disjointed and `flaky', and a sanserif font is which of these are goals of an policy? all that apply., not easy to read.) A final note of The Odyssey Landscapes, style is in a, that margins should be those nominated by the university or those in Style Manual (Australian Government Publishing Service 1988). The above comments about structure and style correctly imply that a PhD thesis with its readership of Landscapes Essay, three examiners is different from a book which has a very wide readership (Derricourt 1992), and from shorter conference papers and journal articles which do not require the burden of proof and references to broader bodies of knowledge required in ethos advertisement PhD theses. Candidates should be aware of The Odyssey Landscapes Essay, these differences and could therefore consider concentrating on completing the thesis before adapting parts of food effects, it for other purposes. However, it must be admitted that presenting a paper at a conference in a candidature may lead to useful contacts with the `invisible college' (Rogers 1983, p. 57) of The Odyssey, researchers in a field, and kohler insight, some candidates have found referees' comments on articles submitted for Landscapes, publication in journals during their candidacy, have improved the quality of their thesis' analysis (and publication has helped them get a job). In A Sentence. Nevertheless, several supervisors suggest that it is preferable to concentrate on the special requirements of the The Odyssey Essay, thesis and adapt it for publication after the PhD has been awarded or while the candidate has temporary thesis `writer's block'. The thesis will have to go through many drafts (Zuber-Skerritt Knight 1986).

The first draft will be started early in the candidature, be crafted after initial mindmapping and ethos advertisement, a tentative table of contents of a chapter and a section, through the The Odyssey Essay, `right', creative side of the brain and kohler insight, will emphasise basic ideas without much concern for detail or precise language. Supervisors and other candidates should be involved in the review of these drafts because research has shown that good researchers ` require the The Odyssey Landscapes Essay, collaboration of examples, others to make their projects work, to get them to completion' (Frost Stablein 1992, p. 253), and The Odyssey Essay, that social isolation is the in "Shattered Essay, main reason for withdrawing from postgraduate study (Phillips Conrad 1992). Essay. By the way, research has also shown that relying on just one supervisor can be dangerous (Conrad, Perry Zuber-Skerritt 1992; Phillips Conrad 1992). Facilitating the kohler insight, creative first drafts of sections, the The Odyssey Landscapes, relatively visible and structured `process' of this paper's structure allows the candidate to be more creative and rigorous with the read to me, `content' of the The Odyssey, thesis than he or she would otherwise be. Kohler Insight. After the first rough drafts, later drafts will be increasingly crafted through the `left', analytical side of the The Odyssey Landscapes Essay, brain and emphasise fine tuning of madness quotes, arguments, justification of Essay, positions and my essay to me, further evidence gathering from other research literature.

A B rief wrap-up sentence that tells the reader how and why this information supports the paper’s thesis. The brief wrap-up is also known as the warrant. The warrant is The Odyssey Landscapes, important to your argument because it connects your reasoning and support to kohler insight your thesis, and it shows that the information in the paragraph is related to your thesis and helps defend it. Supporting evidence (induction and The Odyssey Landscapes deduction) Induction is the type of reasoning that moves from my essay to me specific facts to Essay a general conclusion. When you use induction in your paper, you will state your thesis (which is actually the conclusion you have come to Essay about of Christianity after looking at all the facts) and then support your thesis with the facts.

The following is an example of induction taken from Dorothy U. Landscapes Essay! Seyler’s Understanding Argument : There is the dead body of Smith. Smith was shot in his bedroom between the Communication in "Shattered Glass", hours of 11:00 p.m. and 2:00 a.m., according to the coroner. Smith was shot with a .32 caliber pistol. The pistol left in the bedroom contains Jones’s fingerprints. Jones was seen, by a neighbor, entering the Smith home at around 11:00 p.m. the night of Smith’s death. A coworker heard Smith and Jones arguing in Smith’s office the morning of the day Smith died. Conclusion: Jones killed Smith. Here, then, is the example in bullet form: Conclusion: Jones killed Smith Support: Smith was shot by Jones’ gun, Jones was seen entering the scene of the crime, Jones and Smith argued earlier in The Odyssey the day Smith died. Essay About Of Christianity! Assumption: The facts are representative, not isolated incidents, and thus reveal a trend, justifying the The Odyssey Landscapes, conclusion drawn. When you use deduction in an argument, you begin with general premises and move to a specific conclusion.

There is a precise pattern you must use when you reason deductively. This pattern is called syllogistic reasoning (the syllogism). Syllogistic reasoning (deduction) is organized in in "Shattered Essay three steps: In order for the syllogism (deduction) to work, you must accept that the relationship of the two premises lead, logically, to the conclusion. Here are two examples of deduction or syllogistic reasoning: Major premise: All men are mortal. Minor premise: Socrates is a man.

Conclusion: Socrates is The Odyssey Essay, mortal. Major premise: People who perform with courage and clear purpose in a crisis are great leaders. Minor premise: Lincoln was a person who performed with courage and advertisement a clear purpose in a crisis. Conclusion: Lincoln was a great leader. So in order for deduction to Essay work in examples the example involving Socrates, you must agree that (1) all men are mortal (they all die); and The Odyssey (2) Socrates is a man. If you disagree with either of these premises, the conclusion is invalid.

The example using Socrates isn’t so difficult to kohler insight validate. But when you move into more murky water (when you use terms such as courage , clear purpose , and great ), the Landscapes, connections get tenuous. For example, some historians might argue that Lincoln didn’t really shine until a few years into the Civil War, after many Union losses to Southern leaders such as Robert E. Lee. The following is a clear example of deduction gone awry: Major premise: All dogs make good pets. Minor premise: Doogle is a dog.

Conclusion: Doogle will make a good pet. If you don’t agree that all dogs make good pets, then the Essay The Story of Christianity, conclusion that Doogle will make a good pet is invalid. When a premise in a syllogism is missing, the syllogism becomes an The Odyssey Landscapes, enthymeme. Enthymemes can be very effective in argument, but they can also be unethical and in "Shattered lead to invalid conclusions. Landscapes! Authors often use enthymemes to kohler insight persuade audiences. The following is an The Odyssey Landscapes, example of an enthymeme: If you have a plasma TV, you are not poor. The first part of the Essay The Story of Christianity, enthymeme (If you have a plasma TV) is the The Odyssey Landscapes, stated premise. The second part of the statement (you are not poor) is the conclusion. So the unstated premise is “Only rich people have plasma TVs.” The enthymeme above leads us to Glass" Essay an invalid conclusion (people who own plasma TVs are not poor) because there are plenty of The Odyssey Landscapes Essay, people who own plasma TVs who are poor. Let’s look at this enthymeme in read my essay to me a syllogistic structure:

Major premise: People who own plasma TVs are rich (unstated above). Minor premise: You own a plasma TV. Conclusion: You are not poor. To help you understand how induction and deduction can work together to Landscapes form a solid argument, you may want to look at the United States Declaration of Independence. The first section of the Declaration contains a series of syllogisms, while the middle section is an inductive list of examples. The final section brings the first and about of Christianity second sections together in a compelling conclusion. Following the TTEB method outlined in Essay The Story the Body Paragraph section, forecast all the information that will follow in the rebuttal section and then move point by point through the The Odyssey, other positions addressing each one as you go. The outline below, adapted from Seyler's Understanding Argument , is an kohler insight, example of a rebuttal section from a thesis essay. When you rebut or refute an opposing position, use the following three-part organization: The opponent’s argument : Usually, you should not assume that your reader has read or remembered the argument you are refuting. The Odyssey Essay! Thus at the beginning of your paragraph, you need to state, accurately and fairly, the about of Christianity, main points of the argument you will refute. Your position : Next, make clear the nature of your disagreement with the argument or position you are refuting. Your position might assert, for example, that a writer has not proved his assertion because he has provided evidence that is outdated, or that the Landscapes, argument is filled with fallacies. Your refutation : The specifics of your counterargument will depend upon the nature of your disagreement.

If you challenge the writer’s evidence, then you must present the more recent evidence. Kohler Insight! If you challenge assumptions, then you must explain why they do not hold up. The Odyssey Landscapes Essay! If your position is Glass" Essay, that the piece is filled with fallacies, then you must present and explain each fallacy. Your structure needs to be flexible enough to meet the requirements of your purpose and audience. Conclusions wrap up what you have been discussing in Landscapes Essay your paper. After moving from kohler insight general to specific information in the introduction and The Odyssey Landscapes Essay body paragraphs, your conclusion should begin pulling back into more general information that restates the main points of your argument. Conclusions may also call for action or overview future possible research. The following outline may help you conclude your paper: In a general way,

Restate your topic and why it is important, Restate your thesis/claim, Address opposing viewpoints and explain why readers should align with your position, Call for action or overview future research possibilities. Remember that once you accomplish these tasks, unless otherwise directed by your instructor, you are finished. Done. Complete. Don't try to bring in new points or end with a whiz bang(!) conclusion or try to solve world hunger in the final sentence of your conclusion. Simplicity is best for a clear, convincing message. This case study follows one Caucasian family through their initial assessment and subsequent treatment for their toddler daughter#x02019;s conduct problems over a 2-year period. Clinically meaningful improvements in child and family functioning were found despite the The Odyssey presence of food effects, child, parent, and neighborhood risk factors. There is growing interest in identifying young children at risk for early and persistent trajectories of antisocial behavior (Shaw #x00026; Gross, 2008), motivated by several studies of early-starting antisocial youth (Moffitt, 1993). Several researchers have documented that compared to The Odyssey Essay late starters (who begin delinquent activity in mid-to late adolescence), early starters (who typically initiate antisocial activities before age 10) show a more persistent and chronic trajectory of antisocial behavior extending from middle childhood to food effects adulthood (Moffitt #x00026; Caspi, 2001; Patterson #x00026; Yoeger, 1993). Early starters represent approximately 6% to 7% of the general population of youth yet are responsible for Landscapes Essay, almost half of all adolescent crime and three fourths of violent crimes (Offord, Boyle, #x00026; Racine, 1991). However, despite research suggesting that early-starting pathways of antisocial behavior can be identified as early as age 2 to Essay about The Story 3 (Shaw, Gilliom, Ingoldsby, #x00026; Nagin, 2003), few interventions have focused on the developmental transition of the #x0201c;terrible 2s,#x0201d; a time of great maturational change (Shaw #x00026; Bell, 1993). The Family Check-Up (FCU) is a preventive intervention that has been adapted specifically to address the normative challenges parents face during the terrible 2s, particularly in Essay, high-risk environments where these normative challenges are more likely to lead to negative outcomes (Dishion et al., in press; Shaw, Dishion, Supplee, Gardner, #x00026; Arnds, 2006). The FCU was initially developed and shown to be efficacious in reducing problem behavior among adolescents (Connell, Dishion, Yasui, #x00026; Kavanagh, in press; Dishion #x00026; Kavanagh, 2003). However, it has recently been associated with reductions in young children#x02019;s conduct problems and internalizing problems, as well as improvements in maternal depression, parental involvement, and positive parenting in two independent, randomly controlled trials (Dishion et al., in food, press; Shaw, Dishion, Connell, Wilson, #x00026; Gardner, 2008). In these studies, changes in maternal positive parenting and depression were found to mediate improvements in child problem behavior. The FCU model differs from traditional clinical models and practice in three important ways: it utilizes a health maintenance model, derives much of its power from a comprehensive assessment, and emphasizes motivating change. In addition, there is a primary focus on evaluating caregiving practices through direct observation of parent-child interaction.

In the case of the FCU for toddlers, this task is accomplished by having parent#x02013;child dyads participate in The Odyssey Essay, a series of structured (e.g., clean-up and teaching) and semistructured (e.g., preparing a meal and serving it to the child) tasks. The FCU is also #x0201c;ecological#x0201d; in its emphasis on improving children#x02019;s adjustment across settings by motivating positive parenting practices and involvement in kohler insight, those settings. Moreover, the comprehensive assessment allows tailoring and adaptation, in The Odyssey, that the intervention is #x0201c;fit#x0201d; to the family#x02019;s circumstances and their desires for Essay about, more or less or different forms of Landscapes Essay, intervention. The FCU utilizes two main components to Communication Glass" facilitate change: motivational interviewing and family management practices. The therapist (i.e., Parent Consultant) may provide referrals for help with problems outside of examples, parenting (e.g., language development) or work with families themselves on these issues depending on his or her expertise (e.g., parental depression, marital therapy); however, the core of Essay, most intervention addresses family management issues. Family management includes a collective set of parenting skills, commonly referred to as Parent Management Training (PMT), based on social learning principles of Communication in "Shattered Glass" Essay, reinforcement and modeling (Forgatch et al., 2005; Patterson, 1982; Webster-Stratton #x00026; Hammond, 1997). PMT has been consistently associated with improvement in The Odyssey, parenting and reductions in examples, child conduct problems (Bullock #x00026; Forgatch, 2005; Patterson, Reid, #x00026; Dishion, 1992) and has been formally deemed an #x0201c;empirically supported treatment#x0201d; (Chambless #x00026; Ollendick, 2001). PMT focuses on four main skill sets for the parents of young children: limit setting, proactive parenting, positive reinforcement, and relationship building. Using PMT typically involves providing parents with a rationale to stimulate interest, careful explanation of new skills, and in-session practice using role plays and in The Odyssey Essay, vivo practice with the child. In the FCU, PMT is applied to advertisement examples specific behavior problems highlighted in the assessment.

THE FCU IN THE EARLY STEPS MULTISITE STUDY. The current case illustrates how the FCU integrates basic research on the developmental antecedents of early-starting pathways with validated methods for Landscapes Essay, effecting change in young children#x02019;s conduct problems. The case was drawn from the Early Steps Multisite Study (ESMS), which is the second randomized control trial to test the effectiveness of the FCU with young children. The ESMS is an early intervention project aimed at reducing early-onset conduct problems among high-risk families with toddlers and offers the kohler insight opportunity to examine the efficacy of the FCU with a nonclinical yet high-risk sample of families whose children are at elevated risk for early-starting conduct problems. The ESMS examines the efficacy of the FCU among 731 low-income families with toddlers recruited between 2002 and 2003 from Women, Infants, and Children Nutritional Supplement programs in the metropolitan areas of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Eugene, Oregon; and Charlottesville, Virginia. The current case was recruited from the Pittsburgh site.

Families were approached at Women, Infants, and Children Nutritional Supplement offices and invited to participate if they had a son or daughter between 2 years 0 months and 2 years 11 months of age, following a screen to ensure that they met the study criteria by having socioeconomic, family, and=or child risk factors for child conduct problems. Families who met the screening criteria and The Odyssey Landscapes agreed to Communication Glass" participate were contacted by research assistants to schedule the initial home assessment. The Odyssey Landscapes! During the initial home assessment, described in detail next, examiners carefully reviewed a comprehensive consent form with each primary caregiver. Families were informed about the reason for conducting the research, the source of funding, study procedures (i.e., description of read, random assignment procedures and intervention), risks and benefits, payment, their right to Landscapes withdraw at which policy? all that apply., any time, and The Odyssey confidentiality. Regarding confidentiality, participants were informed that they would not be identified by name in junk food effects, any publication of research results unless they signed a separate form giving their permission. The FCU intervention involves at least three sessions. First is the Landscapes Essay in-home family assessment. The second session involves rapport building via the Parent Consultant#x02019;s (PC#x02019;s) initial interview with the read caregiver(s), referred to as the Get-to-Know-You (GTKY) visit.

The third is a feedback session during which the PC discusses the results of the assessment and initial interview with attention focused on the caregiver#x02019;s readiness to change and the delineation of specific change options. The assessment, which is the first component of the Essay FCU, typically takes place in the family#x02019;s home when research assistants visit the The Story of Christianity family to collect questionnaire and observational data. The assessment, which lasts 2.5 hr, is organized by three central theoretical domains: (a) family management, (b) sociocultural contexts and resources, and (c) problem behavior at home and in Landscapes, alternative care settings. Careful attention was given to selecting measures that could provide useful information in each of the aforementioned domains. When possible, constructs within each domain are measured using multiple informants (parents, other care providers, observers) and kohler insight methods. This assessment provides a wealth of information about child behavior, parenting skills, family dynamics, and life stressors; it also sets the stage for the therapeutic contact between caregivers and parent consultants. The initial contact between the PC and the family occurs when the PC calls to set up the GTKY session. Essay! At this time, the PC introduces himself or herself, briefly explains the intervention portion of the study, and ethos advertisement invites the parent to participate in The Odyssey Landscapes Essay, an introductory meeting and food effects a feedback session. The caregivers#x02019; first session with their PC, the GTKY visit, is usually held in the family#x02019;s home. The GTKY visit focuses on developing a collaborative framework for subsequent intervention activities by emphasizing rapport building and exploring concerns with respect to parenting and the family context (Dishion #x00026; Stormshak, 2007). Caregivers also provide information about family resources (e.g., help of extended family members, strong marital relationship) and liabilities (e.g., unstable housing, a father who is incarcerated).

By the Landscapes end of this visit, caregivers have discussed their concerns and perceptions of their motivation for change. The PC works to ensure that caregivers feel understood and clarifies discrepancies between caregivers#x02019; goals and kohler insight current family functioning. Finally, the PC discusses the purpose of the feedback session and how it will be used to review and address caregivers#x02019; identified concerns. For example, given a concern about noncompliance and temper tantrums, the PC will review the assessment with attention to specific strategies that might help improve the Landscapes Essay cooperation between the caregiver and advertisement examples the child. The third session of the FCU, the family feedback session, takes place at the family#x02019;s home or at an ESMS office, whichever is preferable to the family.

Case conceptualization is a critical feature of the feedback session and is informed by both the assessment and GTKY visit. Family change is approached in a realistic, stepwise fashion, focusing first on issues of safety and Essay security, then moving to issues of behavior management, parenting skills, and Essay relationship building. The feedback session involves a delicate balance among reporting the The Odyssey Landscapes Essay facts about strengths and problems, building motivation for change, and maintaining rapport with parent(s). The feedback session is a collaborative process, one in which the PC delivers the factual information from the assessment and frequently checks in with parents about their perspectives (see Figure 1 ). An emphasis on strengths helps build rapport and therapeutic alliance with the family while encouraging maintenance of positive behaviors. Statements about problem areas are framed in a way that reflect the current research findings and in doing so, ground the information in a meaningful way for parents. My Essay! The PC tailors the feedback material so that it takes into consideration the contextual factors of the The Odyssey Landscapes Essay family, including cultural variation, child development, family structure, socioeconomics, and community and neighborhood factors. At the are goals apply. end of the feedback session, the PC discusses a menu of family-based interventions with the Essay caregivers.

The intervention options stem from previous work using the FCU and focus groups with parents (Dishion #x00026; Stormshak, 2007). Ethos Advertisement! These options include (a) monthly to weekly follow-up support, either in-person or by phone; (b) assistance with specific child behavior problems or parent issues; (c) PMT; (d) preschool/day care consultations; and (e) community referrals. The PC encourages the parents to choose the level and type of services that best meet the family#x02019;s needs. The family chosen for this case study qualified for inclusion in the ESMS based on the presence of sociodemographic risk (i.e., low income and educational attainment), child risk (i.e., high levels of Essay, conduct problems and high levels of ethos examples, parent-child conflict), and The Odyssey Landscapes family risk (i.e., elevated maternal depressive symptoms and parenting hassles). In addition to using a pseudonym, identifying information about the Essay family has been altered to protect their confidentiality. At the The Odyssey Essay time of the age 2 assessment, the Smith family consisted of the mother, a 34-year-old Caucasian female; the father, a 36-year-old Caucasian male; and five children living in the home (ranging from 11 months to 15 years). The Target Child (TC) is their daughter who was 2 years old. Kohler Insight! The mother was a stay-at-home parent and the father was an Essay, unemployed former bus driver. Neither parent held a high school diploma. This marriage was the mother#x02019;s third with multiple children by each husband, including two children with her current husband. The father had children from a previous marriage with whom he has no contact.

The mother and TC participated in a home-based assessment, during which the mother completed questionnaires about TC#x02019;s behavior and her own well-being. Examples! Well-established measures were used when possible (see Table 1 ), and PCs were trained to code the videotaped tasks using an observation manual (Veltman et al., 2003) derived from research with families from similar high-risk environments (e.g., Shaw et al., 2003). Both mother and child participated in observational tasks, including clean-up, teaching, waiting, and meal preparation tasks. The father was not present for the home visit but did complete and return his questionnaires 1 week later. Results from the assessment measures and observational tasks are noted in Table 2 and were incorporated into the feedback session. Both parents were present for the GTKY at age 2. The mother was very talkative during the 1-hr interview.

The mother provided a detailed history of the family and talked openly about her own struggles with depression. She reported that she refused antidepressant medication because of unpleasant side effects. She also talked about an ongoing source of The Odyssey Essay, familial stress: severe harassment by The Story her second ex-husband despite the Landscapes Essay procurement of several Protection from in "Shattered Essay Abuse orders. The harassment by the ex-husband was persistent over the course of 2 years, and both parents expressed a sense of hopelessness about its resolution. In addition, the family lived in a high-crime neighborhood, as described by both parents and observed by Essay the PC and assessment team. The parents expressed their intention to move to another part of the city within the Communication Glass" next year. When asked about the TC, the mother reported concerns about the child#x02019;s developmental progress and the father reported that she had a #x0201c;bad attitude.#x0201d; When asked about the TC#x02019;s behavior problems, both parents agreed that it was #x0201c;her anger.#x0201d; Both parents reported that TC had a #x0201c;quick temper and lashes out,#x0201d; hit her siblings, and yelled frequently.

The parents also agreed that she had an #x0201c;emotional problem,#x0201d; referring to her temper tantrums. The parents did not spontaneously state any positive qualities about the Landscapes TC; when asked, the mother reported that she felt that she had a good relationship with the TC. Feedback Preparation and Case Conceptualization. Consistent with typical practice, the kohler insight feedback session at age 2 was held 1 week after the GTKY. The PC used videotaped and questionnaire data from the assessment to prepare a Child and Family Profile (see Figure 1 ) designed to visually represent the child#x02019;s and family#x02019;s strengths and areas of concern. Areas of strength and concern were determined based on published norms, when available, and data from similar high-risk samples (Shaw et al., 2003). The Odyssey Essay! At a broader level, components of the data were used to generate a conceptualization of the family#x02019;s strengths and challenges so the review follows a logical storyline for the parents. In the FCU process, the PC prepares a comprehensive report about the family#x02019;s and child#x02019;s strengths and potential problems based on the assessment. Scoring the kohler insight Smith#x02019;s assessment measures revealed a number of strengths, including that the The Odyssey mother and father viewed their marital relationship positively and were willing to participate in the feedback session. In addition, the mother felt confident in her parenting skills (see Table 2 ). Examples! When coding the observational tasks, the PC observed that the Landscapes mother was responsive to kohler insight her daughter#x02019;s bids for positive attention and demonstrated a warm and affectionate relationship with her. The child demonstrated strengths in her language ability, as indexed by The Odyssey Landscapes Essay a score at the 70th percentile on the McArthur Communicative Development Index (Fenson et al., 2000).

Several areas of concern were evident, most notably the Communication in "Shattered Glass" TC#x02019;s level and breadth of problem behavior and the mother#x02019;s level of depressive symptoms. According to mother#x02019;s report on two different measures of child behavior, the TC was well into the clinical range for both internalizing and The Odyssey Landscapes externalizing problems (see Table 2 ). Based on 45 min of observational data, she was found to be in Essay, the clinical range for noncompliance (i.e., follows directions less than 50% of the time) and in the borderline clinical range for positive play (i.e., exhibits neutral to positive affect) and aggression (two to The Odyssey Essay five instances of aggression toward both objects and people). Compared with other girls her age, the TC appeared to be on a worrisome behavioral trajectory. There were some areas of concern regarding the mother, namely, that she reported levels of depressive symptoms consistent with clinical depression, a high level of daily stress, and a high level of conflict with her daughter. Mother also demonstrated few skills for setting limits and being proactive during observational tasks.

The family#x02019;s residence in a high crime neighborhood was also seen as an important factor that impacted their level of stress (see Table 2 ). The combined clinical picture for the TC and mother suggested that there were deficits in parenting skills, perhaps because of the examples mother#x02019;s depressive symptomatology and daily stress, which contributed to the child#x02019;s behavioral and emotional problems. In addition, the child was demonstrating high levels of Landscapes, behavioral and emotional problems, which were posited to Essay about contribute to coercive cycles of interaction with her mother (Patterson, 1982). A related concern was that if the mother and Landscapes child did not find more positive ways to interact, both child and maternal behavior would become exacerbated, moving the child into a more entrenched and less malleable trajectory of problem behavior. Interventions aimed at improving these areas could capitalize on existing family strengths, namely, the positive marital relationship, parental willingness to participate, and TC#x02019;s language skills. The family#x02019;s high crime neighborhood and harassment from the ex-husband were also noted on the Child and advertisement examples Family Profile and incorporated into the feedback session, reflecting the family#x02019;s particular needs and context.

During the age 2 feedback, the Smith family expressed a willingness to receive information about their daughter and some hope that they might receive help to better manage her problem behavior. After a brief rapport-building introduction, the The Odyssey PC began the feedback session and asked the self-assessment questions (#x0201c;Over the course of the assessment, what did you learn about TC? What stood out for you?#x0201d;). Both parents responded by ethos stating that their child #x0201c;behaves better when other people are around.#x0201d; The PC clarified that the The Odyssey Landscapes Essay mother believed that the videotaped portions of the kohler insight assessment reflected better-than-usual behavior from the TC. Landscapes! After orienting the parents to the FCU profile and explaining the feedback process, the PC discussed the identified areas of strength and of these are goals of an policy? check all that apply. concern (see Figure 1 ). The Child and Family Profile begins with a focus on Landscapes Essay, child behavior in an effort to align parents with a shared focus about their child#x02019;s well-being. The PC informed the parents that TC was in the clinical range for her aggressive behavior and anxiety-related problems. Kohler Insight! The mother#x02019;s initial response to this information was to elaborate on the areas where TC was aggressive, in particular with her siblings. When the The Odyssey Essay PC asked the mother about food effects her biggest concerns related to TC#x02019;s fights with siblings, she initially minimized the problem by stating that TC would probably outgrow her aggressive behavior. The PC agreed that this was a possibility (rolling with resistance) and then inquired about The Odyssey Landscapes Essay alternate outcomes.

When invited by the PC to consider what would happen if TC did not #x0201c;outgrow#x0201d; the Communication in "Shattered problem, the mother admitted to her fears that TC and siblings might seriously hurt each other #x0201c;by accident.#x0201d; Mrs. Smith then elaborated on several parenting strategies she and Landscapes Essay her husband had tried without success. The PC affirmed their efforts and then offered a normalizing statement about the parents#x02019; struggles with TC. Next, the PC discussed the Communication in "Shattered Glass" potential usefulness of Landscapes Essay, additional or new parenting strategies to address TC#x02019;s problem behavior.

The PC also provided information about TC#x02019;s likely behavioral trajectory (i.e., behavior problems would likely get worse) and the benefits of early intervention versus #x0201c;wait and in "Shattered Glass" see.#x0201d; The PC utilized observational data about TC#x02019;s observed defiance and noncompliance to underscore the seriousness of the concerns about The Odyssey Essay her conduct problems. In addition, the PC and parents discussed TC#x02019;s fearfulness and anxiety, as reported by the mother and observed by about The Story of Christianity the PC. The mother and father expressed moderate concern here and were able to identify some ways in The Odyssey Landscapes, which TC#x02019;s fearfulness is a problem for them, including her #x0201c;clinginess#x0201d; and inability to sleep through the night in her own bed. PC also reported on TC#x02019;s strengths, most notably her language skills and positive affect when spending time with her mother. TC#x02019;s language development was presented as a positive indicator of her ability to kohler insight learn new behavior and Essay respond to her parent#x02019;s requests.

In addition, the PC worked to enhance the parent#x02019;s understanding that a positive relationship with their daughter could motivate their daughter to change her behavior. When reviewing the profile sections on parent wellbeing, the PC informed the parents that the mother#x02019;s scores on self-report measures were indicative of clinical depression. The PC expressed concern about the severity of the mother#x02019;s depressive symptoms, and when PC inquired about them, the mother began to cry and stated that she #x0201c;didn#x02019;t want to Essay talk about it.#x0201d; The PC acknowledged that it would be difficult to parent when feeling so depressed. The PC also provided her with information about the impact of maternal depression on The Odyssey, child behavior, as well as effective interventions and possible resources. Later in the session, the PC indicated that her level of daily parenting stress was another area of concern and linked this to her depressed mood. In addition, the PC noted that the harassment by her ex-husband was also a significant source of stress likely to be influencing her mood. The mother agreed to look into read to me intervention for her depression and stated her intention to The Odyssey Landscapes Essay resolve the situation with her ex-husband.

When the PC reported to the mother about her strengths, including her parenting confidence and relationship with TC, the mother responded with big smiles and verbalized appreciation. Acknowledgment of her strengths provided the mother with the opportunity to Essay verbally elaborate on her positive skills and to express how much she values the relationship she has with her daughter and husband. Furthermore, the PC invited the parents to elaborate on the strengths of their marital relationship, stating that the qualities they mentioned (e.g., communicating well, ability to reach agreement about challenging issues) provided a foundation from which they could parent more effectively as a team. The PC highlighted parent strengths with the The Odyssey Landscapes Essay aim of supporting parental efficacy and read instilling hope for successful behavior change. A key element of the The Odyssey Landscapes feedback process is the goal setting that concludes the session. When the entire profile has been reviewed, the PC offers the parents a summary that highlights the Essay strengths and areas of Essay, concern. In this case, the PC revisited the ethos advertisement concerns about the mother#x02019;s depressive symptoms and The Odyssey Landscapes linked them to other areas of stress and challenges in parenting. The PC also highlighted the parents#x02019; concerns about TC#x02019;s behavior problems and noted the congruence with the observations of to me, noncompliance and defiance. These concerns were presented with the acknowledgment and validation of child and parent strengths. The PC then asked the parents to consider the feedback and invited them to set goals for The Odyssey, their child and themselves. They set three goals: (a) for the family to move to about The Story of Christianity a new neighborhood that was safer and removed from the ex-husband, (b) for the mother to The Odyssey Essay meet with a psychiatrist to discuss antidepressant medication and other intervention options, and (c) for the parents to work with their daughter to reduce her temper tantrums and aggressive behavior.

As part of the FCU, families are able to determine the amount and intensity of follow-up intervention, if any, they wish to receive. The intervention plan is derived in a collaborative manner, focusing on The Story, the issues identified in the feedback session and any other issues the parents want to Landscapes address. In this case, the PC met with both parents for 10 sessions following the junk effects feedback session. Sessions were scheduled for every other week. Early sessions focused on the mother#x02019;s depressive symptoms and harassment from her ex-husband. With regard to nonparenting issues, clinicians using the FCU model typically respond in Landscapes Essay, a manner consistent with standard clinical practice, for example, utilizing cognitive behavioral techniques to deal with depression, offering advocacy and creating a safety plan for domestic violence. Nonparenting issues are addressed with the aim to support family functioning and cohesiveness, as appropriate. For example, a common service PC#x02019;s provide is referral and my essay to me advocacy for accessing community resources. The FCU model works to facilitate connection with services in a family#x02019;s community to increase their network of support and self-sustainability. In this case, while the PC worked with the The Odyssey Landscapes Essay mother to reduce her depressive symptoms, she also assisted the mother in finding a psychiatrist.

Regarding the harassment from the mother#x02019;s exhusband, the PC explored possible responses with both parents. My Essay! The family formalized their plans to move to a better neighborhood farther away from the ex-husband and completed this move within 3 months of the feedback session. Once these initial issues were addressed, the The Odyssey Landscapes Essay mother expressed willingness to work on TC#x02019;s disruptive behavior. Specifically, she was interested in ethos advertisement, reducing the The Odyssey Essay number of fights her children had during the day and increasing TC#x02019;s compliance. Over the course of the next seven sessions, the PC explored TC#x02019;s problem behaviors and their associated patterns with both parents by using several tools. These included the Good Behavior Game (Dishion #x00026; Patterson, 1996); the use of incentives, praise, and Essay of Christianity encouragement; troubleshooting problem areas; and teaching the proper administration of a Time Out. In general, the intervention phase of the The Odyssey FCU prioritizes teaching parents better skills for positive reinforcement, including praise and encouragement. When parents choose to junk food effects focus on The Odyssey, parenting skills, the PC typically spends about 45 min on Glass" Essay, the chosen skill area, with the The Odyssey Landscapes Essay additional 15 min of the session addressing nonparenting concerns and junk food effects generating a plan of action. Typically, sessions involve the parents and bring the child in on The Odyssey Landscapes, occasion for in vivo practice. For each content area, which in this case included incentives, praise and encouragement, and limit setting, the intervention followed a typical process: (a) providing parents with the rationale for the new skill; (b) having the PC demonstrate the new skill to parents; (c) having parents practice the new skill in are goals, session with role plays and making corrections; (d) assigning parents homework; and (e) reviewing homework, successes, and challenges during the next visit.

This model is drawn from Landscapes PMT (Bullock #x00026; Forgatch, 2005). For example, these parents expressed an interest and willingness to food learn more about the The Odyssey Essay proper use of ethos advertisement examples, incentives. The PC first provided the The Odyssey Landscapes Essay parents a rationale for incentives, explaining that they can be used to help children learn new behavior by rewarding positive behavior. The PC then invited the about of Christianity parents to generate a list of positive behaviors they would like to Landscapes Essay encourage in their daughter. Once the parents generated this list, they were asked to select one behavior that they would like to focus on for the next week. Essay About The Story! The PC then invited the TC into the room and demonstrated to the parents how a sticker could be used to encourage positive behavior. The PC provided parents with stickers and asked them to Landscapes practice this, thus clarifying an ethos examples, effective way to explain and introduce the The Odyssey Landscapes Essay behavior to the TC. Another tool used to encourage good behavior is The Good Behavior Game.

The Good Behavior Game promotes prosocial behavior among young children by (a) asking the Communication in "Shattered Essay parent to tell their children that they can earn a reward if they can play nicely for 10 min (with use of Essay, a timer), (b) establishing and describing reasonable and motivating rewards, (c) carefully explaining what #x0201c;play nicely#x0201d; means, (d) asking children to repeat back the instructions, and (e) using a sticker chart to in "Shattered Glass" Essay keep track of children#x02019;s positive play. Landscapes! In sum, the PC provided information about junk effects motivating children, the benefits of praise and encouragement, the role of parent involvement, and key components of proactive parenting. In addition, the PC introduced the The Odyssey Landscapes book Preventive Parenting with Love, Encouragement and Limits (Dishion #x00026; Patterson, 1996) and provided ESMS project-based brochures and informational materials. Over the course of the next two assessment periods (when TC was age 3 and 4, respectively), both TC and the mother demonstrated marked improvement in read to me, several domains. At the age 3 assessment, TC#x02019;s behavior had improved to the extent that she was no longer in the clinical range for either the internalizing or externalizing scales on the Child Behavior Checklist, improvement that was maintained at the age 4 assessment.

In addition, the mother#x02019;s Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression Scale score, which was well into the clinical range at Landscapes Essay, the age 2 assessment, dropped to of these apply. well within the The Odyssey Essay normal range at the age 4 assessment. In addition, observations of junk, parent-child interaction revealed steady and The Odyssey Landscapes Essay stepwise improvement over the next 2 years, including marked improvements in child noncompliance and aggression, as well as maternal limit setting and proactive parenting (see Table 2 ). The FCU represents a cost-effective intervention that can lead to clinically meaningful results, such as improvements in child behavior and maternal wellbeing. The main components of the FCU are the GTKY and Feedback Sessions, which last 30 min and 90 min, respectively. Upon completion of the feedback session, parents can choose to participate in advertisement, tailored follow-up sessions, if they wish. Even when more numerous follow-up sessions are involved, the FCU is time and cost effective.

To date, there has been no formal cost effectiveness assessment of the FCU. However, compared with other relatively brief and The Odyssey Landscapes empirically validated interventions for child problem behavior, such as Forgatch#x02019;s PMT and Webster-Stratton#x02019;s family-based intervention, the FCU appears to junk food require a fewer number of sessions to achieve beneficial effects. Conducting a cost assessment of the FCU is clearly an issue that merits attention in the near future. In the The Odyssey case study presented in this article, the PC spent a total of 18 hr of Glass" Essay, face-to-face time with the Smith family in the 1st year. The time spent decreased steadily over the subsequent years of the study, with a total of 8 hr of direct contact in the 2nd year and 2 hr of direct contact in Essay, the 3rd year. In terms of case preparation (scoring assessment measures, coding videotaped interactions), the Essay The Story of Christianity amount of time the PC spent in Essay, these activities also decreased over the years.

Activities not involving direct service delivery, including case preparation and scoring, required 10 hr of PC time in Year 1, 3#x000bd; hr in Year 2, and only 2 hr in Year 3. Thus, once the process is learned and PCs become adept with the process of preparing for feedback sessions, the kohler insight FCU becomes a potent and brief intervention. In terms of completing the home assessment, research assistants spent an average of 1 hr of travel time in addition to the 2#x000bd; hr home visit, for The Odyssey Essay, a total of examples, 3#x000bd; to 4 hr per assessment. Whereas in actual practice the same individual might be responsible for conducting the assessment and the intervention, the research project elected to have a different person serve these roles. The FCU was designed to integrate research on risk factors for The Odyssey Essay, children#x02019;s early conduct problems into an ecological, family-based intervention to prevent problem behavior among high-risk families with toddlers. The Smith family is a representative illustration of this innovative method to read my essay reach families at key developmental transitions in at-risk environments. The Smith family presented with a complicated family history, a number of contextual risk factors, and a 2-year-old daughter who was demonstrating both conduct problems and emotional problems. The Odyssey Landscapes! Over the course of the FCU, the family showed improvement in advertisement examples, several areas, including parenting and child problem behavior, as well reductions in maternal depression and contextual risk. This is The Odyssey Landscapes consistent with the research showing that improvements in child conduct problems are accompanied by are goals of an all that increases in the mother#x02019;s positive parenting and Essay decreases in maternal depression (Dishion et al., in junk, press; Shaw et al., 2008; Shaw et al., 2006). This family was atypical in one respect#x02014;families in the ESMS participate in an average number of 3.7 in-person sessions with the PC per year, including the GTKY and the Feedback sessions , whereas this family engaged in 12 sessions their first year, and then 3 to 4 in The Odyssey Landscapes, the following 2 years. After their 1st year of more intensive involvement, which was consistent with the family#x02019;s breadth of risk, the family followed the more typical pattern of direct contact with the PC.

One of the strengths of of these are goals of an check apply., this health-maintenance model is the repeated nature of assessment and Landscapes intervention. The FCU model involves yearly #x0201c;check-ups,#x0201d; which provide clinicians with the unique opportunity to collaboratively track family and child behavior over time and continue to motivate families to kohler insight change persistent areas of difficulty. For example, it is not uncommon for a family to The Odyssey Essay minimize problems and my essay decline intervention in the 1st year and then engage in the intervention the next year when they discover that the problem behavior has not changed. With some frequency, during the age 3 GTKY, families are able to acknowledge the reality of The Odyssey Essay, a problem situation in their 2nd year that they were #x0201c;waiting to see#x0201d; about at the age 2 FCU. It is sometimes the repeated review of data, demonstrating that without intervention these problems persist and often worsen over time that can elicit motivation from parents to take action. This phenomenon is an essential strength of the FCU approach: Through repeated regular contact with families using assessment-driven feedback aimed at motivational change, families who would not usually seek intervention on their own are motivated to read change . This change in motivation is particularly important for toddlers at risk for early starting conduct problems based on their high probability of persistence (Shaw et al., 2003; Shaw, Lacourse, #x00026; Nagin, 2005). In addition, it is common for interventionists to spend time working with basic issues related to safety and harm reduction early in intervention (e.g., excessive conflict between divorced spouses).

We find that this initial work sets the foundation for establishing trust in the PC, for families to be open to viewing their child#x02019;s behavior more realistically, and for The Odyssey Essay, families#x02019; willingness to learn new child management strategies. It is important to note that the FCU can be adapted and tailored for use in of these of an check all that apply., a range of service settings such as the public school environment or community-based clinic (Dishion #x00026; Kavanagh, 2003). For example, interventionists may choose to focus the assessment primarily on school-related behavior or only on the child#x02019;s behavior in The Odyssey Landscapes, the home. About Of Christianity! In addition, the The Odyssey Landscapes Essay assessment portion of the FCU could be shortened to make it easier to Glass" deliver in a typical mental health clinic or school setting. The content of the FCU can also be tailored to the needs of different developmental stages (toddlerhood, school age, adolescent), client populations and specific issues. For example, the FCU has been adapted to examine the health-related behaviors of children transitioning to adolescence, with a particular focus on children#x02019;s sleep, emotion regulation, and physical activity. In this #x0201c;health promotion#x0201d; version of the The Odyssey FCU, the assessment and follow-up interventions focus on youth#x02019;s sleep quality, level of physical activity, and emotion regulation as a set of domains that are relevant for navigating the challenges associated with this developmental stage.

In addition to showing intervention effects on child problem behavior, parenting, and maternal depression, the FCU has been found to be effective for promoting change in a wide range of family structures, cultural backgrounds, and contextual risk factors as well as across a broad range of age groups (Dishion et al., in Essay about of Christianity, press; Shaw et al., 2008; Shaw et al., 2006). For example, the FCU is currently being used with older children and adolescents in Oregon and with American Indian families living on a reservation. Perhaps the most novel feature of the FCU is the The Odyssey Essay flexibility it provides clinicians in tailoring interventions to the individual family#x02019;s challenges and strengths, as well as to the family#x02019;s perception of the child#x02019;s problem behavior. By integrating the use of motivational interviewing within an ecological framework and utilizing empirically validated methods for promoting change, the my essay model also fits well with current conceptualizations of developmental psychopathology that recognize multiple risk factors and pathways leading to similar problematic outcomes for children (Richters #x00026; Cicchetti, 1993). One important issue for the use of the information provided in this case study in clinical practice is that family participation might follow a different pattern or level of engagement outside of the research setting. ESMS families receive payment for their participation in the assessment and gift cards for their participation in The Odyssey Essay, the feedback session.

It remains to be seen whether the Essay about The Story of Christianity FCU will appeal to families in pediatric or other community settings without such incentives. In addition, retention of families over time may be more challenging in a traditional community setting, where staff may not have the time to search for families who have moved or to conduct follow-up phone calls. Presently, the creators of the FCU are considering innovative ways to apply this model more broadly and are working to tailor the The Odyssey assessment and feedback process so that it is more user friendly for both therapists and parents. Ideally, the FCU assessment can be reduced to about 35 to 45 min with the feedback session more finely tailored to junk specific family needs. Despite these limitations, we believe the FCU holds much promise for preventing the onset of child problem behavior across developmental status of the child, the type of child problem behavior, the family#x02019;s cultural and socioeconomic background, and the setting for contact with families. Future follow-up studies of the ESMS efficacy trial will test whether intervention effects found for reductions in early child problem behavior and maternal parenting and depression will endure across time and setting as children transition to the school-age period. However, as such effects appear to be evident across adolescence for a similar sample of Essay, at-risk youth (Connell et al., in press), we are optimistic about the FCU#x02019;s effectiveness and use in other settings with other at-risk populations for promoting child and family well-being.

Moreover, as the presented case illustrates, the FCU can be a powerful preventative intervention for families who might not otherwise seek services for their children by addressing motivation and giving families flexible intervention plans that match their unique situation. Additionally, it is easy to Essay incorporate VIM’s processes for The Odyssey Essay participation models. As stated earlier, VIM is most applicable in protected areas management. Despite this, it is compulsory to apply formal frameworks to influence its positive performance. VIM’s framework follows the following steps; Pre-assessing database review- in this step, the management compiles and reviews applicable information that it already has so as to obtain initial problems’ perspectives.

Identifying probable impacts’ causes- isolates potential factor that could contribute to impact conditions. Identifying management strategies- this step identifies a variety of strategy alternatives that helps in The Odyssey Landscapes recognizing type, amount and the distribution of my essay, people suing activities. Another framework is VAMP, which includes the following steps; Selecting objectives for visitor activities Setting terms of references Identifying visitor management issues Analyzing visitor management issue Developing visitor activity and services options Providing propositions and The Odyssey Landscapes seeking the approval of services, activities or facility plan Implementing recommended options. These processes can extend to include other steps, especially in areas with broader analysis scales.

The additional steps would include reviewing and identifying issues, indicator selection, resources inventory, indicator standards specification, iterative monitoring process and implementation, impact versus standards comparison, and management alternative identification. Advertisement? The framework uses social and natural science’s information to assist the decision making process. Landscapes Essay? It also employs an open market orientation to which of these are goals of an expansionary check include resource opportunities with visitor demands. In this respect, the management at Singapore Zoo could use it to ensure that over crowding does not affect allocation of recreational activities. The framework helps the management develop various options for services and activities for visitors, and The Odyssey Landscapes provide advices on activity approval plan.

The park’s management would use this framework to plan and ensure that the number of Essay about The Story, visitors to the park at any point coincides with the number of available resources.Visitor management is The Odyssey Landscapes, a key concept to the functioning of the Department of Conservation (DOC) strategy, as it fosters utilization of historic and natural recreational resources. The DOC visitor strategy allows the management of The Story, design the management process by seeking to The Odyssey Essay identify values, assessing potential visitor impacts, responding and monitoring the impacts and developing an ideal management regime. Advertisement Examples? The focus of the DOC is to develop a standard process, which identifies key visitor impacts, especially on The Odyssey Essay, the values of the location. To do this effectively, the strategy employs the help of other management agencies like Geographic Information Systems. VAMP should always be linked to the objectives of the overall management site. Its analysis and investigation sites should recognize the cause of impacts in order to allow the set up of deeper research and monitoring framework.

In the past, Visitor Management was based on the interpretations and perceptions of managers on ethos advertisement, the ground. In addition to this, agency’s policies and Landscapes Essay legislation drove its operations. Presently, stakeholders’ involvement is possible for ethos advertisement reviewing relevant objectives, selecting central monitoring standards and indicators and initiating input into related strategies for management. The Odyssey? This stakeholder involvement is beneficial in instances where there are suitable indicators of unacceptable consequences. Junk Effects? In this case, the input of the public is able to identify relevant stakeholder perceptions on specific issues. In this respect, traditional VIM was similar to the processes of The Odyssey Essay, LAC. The Limits of Acceptable Change (LAC) A central wilderness management goal is restoring or maintaining solitude and naturalness qualities. Sometimes human-induced changes usually threat the quality of solitude and naturalness qualities of the kohler insight, wilderness. It is possible to eliminate recreational changes if the management prohibits incorrect use of the wilderness by visitors.

Because of this, wilderness management challenge is not preventing human induced change, but deciding on the extent of change allowable, where this changed is allowed and the control actions the management can use. This paper looks into the amount of allowable change, explicitly defined by quantitative standard means, procedural evaluation and monitoring of management as well as the apposite management actions. The processes of The Odyssey Landscapes Essay, LAC oblige managers to characterize needed conditions of the wilderness and undertake appropriate measures to achieve and maintain these conditions. Certain pressures influence these conditions, including fire control, recreation, mining, and grazing. Despite having identified recreation as an important concern of LAC, it is important to emphasize that the management of the wilderness absorbs more than recreation. The following LAC processes provide a structure for managing the dilemma of accommodating human use, yet preserving the quality of the wilderness. These processes provide basic attention to the conditions of the wilderness that are present, and those that the management judge as acceptable.

An important aspect of the LAC process is the explicit recognition of the value of ethos examples, presenting diverse wilderness circumstances. Putting in mind that any wilderness use usually results into some amount of effect, the processes oblige managers to Landscapes identify locations of read my essay, damage, the extent and the appropriate or acceptable degrees of change. The LAC process includes four fundamental components; the first component is specifying the achievable and satisfactory resource and social conditions, through measurable parameters. The Odyssey Landscapes? The second component is analyzing the relationship between the conditions that already exists and of an policy? all that those that the management judges as acceptable. Thirdly, the management must identify the necessary actions for achieving the conditions and lastly, the management must establish a program for monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of the The Odyssey Landscapes, management. The four components are further divided into nine steps in order to junk effects facilitate their application.

The first step is identifying an The Odyssey Landscapes, area of concern or issue, step two us defining and describing class opportunity, step three is examples, selecting resource indicators and social conditions, step four, establishing an inventory resource, step five, specifying resource conditions and social indicators, step six identifying alternative allocations for opportunity class. Step seven includes identifying appropriate management actions for every alternative, followed by an evaluation and selection of an effective alternative, and finally, implementing actions and monitor conditions. Application of the LAC. The application of LAC follows is a step by step process, focus on each of the nine steps. The Odyssey Landscapes? In the application in Singapore zoo, it is necessary to of Christianity define an issue area as well as concerns of the public and the management. Singapore Zoo is the earliest and most important zoo in Singapore. Because it attracts numerous visitors every year, a common issue that the management has identified is animal feeding and littering. In the application, the first step is identifying and describing opportunity classes. The opportunities that both the public and The Odyssey Landscapes Essay the management identify are littering, over crowding and ethos advertisement examples animal feeding.

After this, it is The Odyssey, necessary to select resource and social conditions indicators. The possible indicators here include recreationist encounters, forage utilization and multiple trails. Recreation Opportunity Spectrum. This is a behavioural approach, which helps land managers identify and provide diversified recreational opportunities for public land managers (Diamantis, 2004). It recognizes the human beings seek not just a recreational site, but a complex experience that comes from a mixture of related factors. This tool allows managers to zone, describe and provide varied experiences fro recreation to the public, while acknowledging that no one land piece can offer an entire spectrum of recreational activities. The spectrum that ROS identifies the range on a continuum of primitive to semi-primitive, natural to rural, motorized to reloaded, to urban.

Every classification has different sorts of settings. Primitive classification may focus on junk food, the social setting that is most appropriate for encounters with less than six parties’ days on trial (Pigram , M.J 2006). On the other hand, reloaded natural may focus on necessary social setting, which allows moderate to the high road contacts. The Odyssey Essay? ROS seeks to identify large land polygons, where specific recreational experiences would be most available to food effects the public. It has tentative specifications, which are expressed in percentage range. ROS also understands that when people consider outdoor recreation opportunities, they make choices on activities, settings and The Odyssey Landscapes recreational experiences. A recreation opportunity setting refers to examples a combination of social, biological, physical and managerial conditions, which adds value to a place. In this respect, an opportunity includes nature qualities (landscapes, vegetation and scenery), recreational use qualities (types and levels of use ) and conditions that the management provides (regulations, roads and developments). It is possible for the management to provide recreational opportunities when it combines these variations. The primary assumption under ROS is that management can assure outdoor recreation quality by The Odyssey Essay, providing diversified opportunities.

There are numerous preferences and tastes for recreational activities, however, many visitors consider personalized quality as the most important quality. Recreation opportunities should provided different psychological outcomes, Application of the ROS. Managers can use ROS to offer visitors with certain information about what the site is like, and not the experiences visitors should expect. The visitor’s opportunity choice will offer feedback on the degree to which opportunities accomplish the outcomes that visitors desired.

ROS provides a framework that varies situational attributes explicitly, in order to yield several recreational opportunities. Kohler Insight? The recreationists will utilize these opportunities to derive satisfaction. The opportunity factor is The Odyssey, defined using several factors including access, non recreational resource uses, onsite management, social interaction, visitor management acceptability and acceptable regimentation level. Types of access include trails, cross-country travel and roads. ROS helps management design and define access systems. Research indicates wide preference in the type of access that cuts across many conditions (Dawson Hendee, 2008). Non recreational resource factor considers the extent of use of non recreational resources such as grazing and mining. For example, visitors to semi arid primitive locations with roads usually accept logging and grazing, though they may express concerns over large clear cuts. About The Story Of Christianity? On site management feature includes modifications to Landscapes Essay the site such as vegetation of ethos advertisement, exotic species, landscaping, vegetation management and The Odyssey Landscapes Essay traffic barriers.

Evaluating the appropriateness of site management is done by which of an check, considering four elements; modification extent, modification extent, modification apparentness, and facilities. The fourth factor is social interaction. Landscapes Essay? Recreationists tend to have low interaction levels in primitive settings while the opposite is observable in modern settings. Insufficient interaction levels in read certain settings especially modern, is The Odyssey Landscapes Essay, sometimes undesirable, as is excessive interaction levels in primitive settings (Jamal Robinson, 2009). Managers of sites must pay attention to the necessary type of use for every setting. Which Expansionary Policy? Check Apply.? For example, in primitive settings, recreationists may travel by The Odyssey Landscapes Essay, foot while cars and automobiles are most applicable in modern settings. The fifth factor in ROS is visitor impacts accessibility. These impacts may be felt by other people through noises or on resources through pollution and trampling. Food Effects? Any use on sites usually result into some impact, therefore, it is upon the management to decide on the appropriate levels of impacts. Managers must maintain equal opportunities for excellent recreation.

They must also maintain and The Odyssey Landscapes protect the kohler insight, values of other resources. To do this, they must identify the appropriate levels of impact, which is done through environmental analysis. The last factor is acceptable regimentation, which describes the extent, nature and control level of opportunities. Modern opportunities tend to be more organized and regulate, compared to The Odyssey primitive ones. To achieve efficiency, managers combine these factors in order to cove a comprehensive spectrum of recreational opportunities.

This combination determines the allowable range for recreational activities. The ROS offers a thinking strategy for of these are goals policy? check managers, which helps them determine recreation opportunities appropriate for specific areas. However, ROS also has application in planning and allocating recreational resources, matching the recreationist experiences with their desired opportunities, and estimating the impacts of decisions made by Landscapes, management over recreational opportunities.
